Catholic theologian Hans Kung attacks again with his critical book, in which he does not spare Ratzinger. In his new book, a precise act of accusation against the current pope appears, as documented by Andrea Torquini in the newspaper Repubblica of Monday, September 10: “Ratzinger was a professor of theology with me, but later he revealed himself as the son of a gendarme, which is really was. He submitted to the Curia, accused me of being “not a Catholic” and finally condemned me. He did all this while simultaneously playing a double game: he wrote me letters of forgiveness while preparing sanctions against me.” One kind of showdown with Pope Benedict XVI, with whom he apparently reconciled after a recent meeting. What Der Spiegel reports on with essential content. Kung and Ratzinger were professors together at the University of Tubingen, where the most famous Faculty of Theology in Europe is located. It was Kung who suggested Tubingen to accept Ratzinger, who was teaching in Muenster. “We worked together for three years,” says Kung in his book, which is not without amusing details: Kung then liked Alfa Romeo, and Ratzinger rode a bicycle. Often, in bad weather, Kung tied Ratzinger up by placing his bicycle on the pannier racks. It seemed to me that we were on the same wavelength,” writes the theologian. But it wasn’t like that, he continues. When, at the end of the sixties, the currents pushing for council reform strengthened, the moment of decision came. Both for him and for me. He versus me I myself decided not to align myself with the hierarchies of Rome and the centralist Church… I wanted to be a Catholic Christian to serve people who are both inside and outside the Church.”
